Orleans Kiwanis
About Orleans Kiwanis
Kiwanis offers such an opportunity within an international organization of over 6,000 individual clubs worldwide. While many clubs, including those organizations other than Kiwanis, bring a dimension to their communities that local governments can’t provide, the Kiwanis Club of Orleans has gained stellar notoriety for accomplishing much with very little.
The following short list of Kiwanis programs represents fund-raising activities, from which all monies are returned directly to our community to support local efforts such as the Cumberland Resource Center.
STAPLES SCHOOL SUPPLIES PROGRAM
Suggested by our current president Bill Cowperthwiate, this program grew from our recognition of a dire need into a nation-wide program as we teamed up with Staples to match over 100 stores across Canada with local Kiwanis Clubs to collect over $2 million in school supplies every August.
KIWANIS ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND (KAP)
Located at Millennium Sports Complex on Trim, just south of Innes, KAP is the largest play-structure in Ottawa. First envisioned in 1999, the Kiwanis Club of Orleans finally realized our dream in July of 2006 with a successful gathering of over 150 volunteers to help put the finishing touches on structure construction and safety surfaces. Together we have built a legacy to our community and City that will endure for our children’s children.
SKREAMERS
The Kiwanis Haunted House has helped raise funds for the Kiwanis Adventure Playground and will continue to do so for years to come. Currently partnering with Proulx Farms in Cumberland, plans are to produce a fun and entertaining scary wagon ride and haunted barn to benefit the other community programs we support.
WORLD TRIVIA NIGHT
the world’s largest trivia contest was founded by the Kiwanis Club of Orleans. Over 2,500 participants gather in early November in the Cattle Castle at Landsdown Park to raise badly needed funds for the Champions for Children, the fund-raising branch of the Ottawa Children’s Aid Society. During the last 8 years this program has raised over $300,000.
GLOUCESTER FAIR SPECIAL NEEDS PARTY
Every year, the Gloucester Fair conducts a private party for up to 1,000 physically and mentally challenged children from our region. The Kiwanis Club of Orleans is proud to be the sponsoring lead of numerous other clubs in our national-capital area who contribute to this programs successful production.
Come join us!
The few programs listed above can only be accomplished by volunteers who are dedicated to helping their community and those less fortunate. The Kiwanis Club of Orleans is always seeking like-minded citizens to join us in our efforts.
